Working Within Diversity and Anti-Oppressive Practice - The Book

In this reflective guide, I tackle what it means to work within diversity as a therapist - to actively reflect on your own identity and experiences and how they affect the therapeutic relationships between you and your clients.

Presenting a brand-new model of anti-oppressive practice, the book examines topics such as power and privilege, cultural humility and how professionals can work to remove barriers to counselling and therapy.

It focuses specifically on race, ethnicity and faith, while also considering the implications of intersectional identities.

The workbook elements of this book encourage self-reflection and the implementation of new ideas within the therapeutic process and relationship.

There is an emphasis on practical application throughout the book and it will inspire you to consider what 'working within diversity' and working cross-culturally really looks like in the therapy room itself.

The term 'Working Within Diversity' and its emergent model and concept, was first coined by Myira Khan in September 2020.

I first publicly presented it at one of my workshops on 'Working with ethnically minoritised and marginalised communities' to a counselling service on 10th September 2020.

The term and the model of 'Working Within Diversity' has emerged from over 12 years of clinical practice and experience, as a Counsellor, Supervisor and Counselling tutor.

The term, and its model and concept, is now delivered through a series of workshops called the 'Working within Diversity' series and the brand-new book of its name - Working Within Diversity - out 21st July 2023!

For more details of upcoming workshops on 'Working Within Diversity' and anti-oppressive practice please see my events page.
